SMTP Software or DNS Software are the two types of Bulk Email Sending Software to choose from

One sends through your DNS server and the other routes mail through an SMTP server, some softwares will do both.

The advantage of using DNS server software is the ability to use your computer as an actual mail server.

So instead of sending your message through your SMTP Mail Server you are sending it directly to your recipients mailbox. Sending through DNS is ideal if your ISP doesn't provide an SMTP Server that you can use, or if your ISP has limitations on the amount off email messages per hour you can send.

Sending through this DNS can be slower because it needs to talk to each recipients mail server directly. However it will greatly reduce the number of possible bounces that you receive.

By sending through DNS your ISP can't really see what you are sending, however when the recipient receives your emails, they can still see your IP information in the header.  For this reason, DNS software is best used for opt-in email list or if you plan to send UCE, then a bulk friendly ISP is highly recommended.

The advantage of using SMTP server software is the ability to route your mail through different servers. A few companies offer "blind open relay servers" as a monthly subscription where you can get daily blind smtp IP's. When you use these servers, your email IP information is hidden from the final recipient thus greatly reducing complaints to your ISP.

Before you buy a submission software to run for your computer there are some important considerations. 

If you run the software from your computer you either need to have your computer on all the time, or it must be set to come on periodically if you use autoresponders.

How big is your list and how big do you expect it to get.  Here is why this is important.

If your list is so big that you can't send each email 'manually', it's probably too big to send from your home computer whether you have automation software or not!

Why is this?

Because your Internet Service Provider will set a limit on how many emails you can send in a certain time period.

While it will very, a typical ISP will set a limit of say 200 emails in an hour.

If you end up with a large list for your newsletter you simply will not be able to do it from your computer.

Even if your ISP has no limit, sending emails to a list of thousands would tie up your computer and phone line for hours, if not days.
